The Last Thing to Die

Directed by Sofia Bullones

We came to The Last Thing to Die at quite a late stage after another engineer had left the project. There had been some problems during production and as a result there wasn’t a lot to work with in terms of location sound.

The brief was to create a thick and heavy, post-nuclear type of atmosphere with desolate style winds. The director wanted us to work closely with the composer, Natasa Paulberg, in order to create a fusion between the score and sound design. The music plays a huge role in bringing the film to life and we liaised closely with Natasa throughout the process to make sure we were getting right balance between design and score.

Without much production sound to work with we built the world from scratch through many layers of sound design. We used a lot of low-end material to give weight to the atmospheres, while the use of spectral filtering and morphing allowed us to fuse the sounds of thunder storms with electrical and mechanical devices to create otherworldly storm sounds.

We also did some Foley work in the studio to flesh out the main character’s movements and footsteps.
